The population is approximately 155,000.  The climate averages a high of 94 degrees in the summer and a low of 31 degrees in the winter; although it is common to have between 3-5 days of snow/ ice in the winter.  Consistently ranked as one of America’s fastest-growing cities, McKinney was originally settled in 1849, and still retains its hometown charm and boasts exceptional quality of life. The city of McKinney is 65.8 square miles with an additional 50 square miles to be captured within the ETJ (Extra Territorial Jurisdiction) in the future for a total of 115.8 square miles.  Located approximately 30 miles from the Dallas Metroplex, the City of McKinney is the county seat of Collin County and is set apart from its surrounding North Texas suburbs with a charming historic district that is the second largest in Texas.  

Options for housing are quite diverse and range from starter homes and condominiums to luxury homes and homes on land. There are two large master planned communities in McKinney, Stonebridge Ranch and Craig Ranch.  Stonebridge Ranch is a 5000+ acre community with 1200 acre of open space for parks and green space that began development in the late 1980’s with the final neighborhoods completed in 2016. Craig Ranch has 6200 acres of urban and mixed use development with 400+ acres of park land.  Both feature award winning golf courses for the avid golfers in the family. There are many other smaller developments in McKinney for all lifestyles.  

With abundant park and recreational areas there is always something to do. community pools, skate park, tennis courts, competitive volleyball gym, several recreational lakes nearby, natatorium, senior citizens facility, dog parks, hike and bike trails, historic downtown shopping, including seasonal festivals, local wineries and breweries, Heard Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary, and multiple other venues.

The McKinney Economic Development Corporation actively pursues investments in aeronautics/aviation and defense, healthcare/ medical, clean manufacturing, emerging technology, and corporate headquarters/office. McKinney National Airport boasts amenities like an updated runway to accommodate all types of business aircraft, a state-of-the-art air traffic control tower and on-field U.S. Customs. For commercial air travel, McKinney is a quick 40-minute drive from DFW International and Dallas Love Field Airports.


McKinney Independent School District is consistently ranked as a top district by the Texas Education Agency.  Our high schools are ranked in the top 3% of High Schools by US News.
